Don’t make the same mistake I did

February 3, 2016 By Eric Douglas

Entering the hospital, I passed a friend from church who was going home. The first thing she told me was how much she enjoyed these columns. And then she asked why I was at the hospital. I hadn’t had a chance to tell my family, primarily my daughters, at that point, so I evaded the question as well as I could.

Recently, something happened in my life that has changed my perspective on, well, just about everything. I went to see a cardiologist because I was experiencing some chest discomfort. (I was sure it was just heartburn. I was way too young to have heart problems.) By the end of the day I had been admitted to the hospital and was waiting on a heart catheterization and probable stent. After the heart cath, they determined there were blockages and I was going to have to have bypass surgery.

There are so many clichés about events like this. Every one of them makes the writer in me flinch, so I will do my best to avoid them. Still, when you fail a stress test (I told the doctor I’ve always been good at taking tests…) it is definitely a wake-up call. While I don’t plan to completely shift the focus of this column to talking about my heart, I imagine it will come up regularly in the next few months as I work through cardiac rehab and improve my overall health. If you can learn something while I learn it, we both benefit.

For now, I will say, don’t think you are “too young” or “it can’t happen to me, I have no family history.” I am 48 and have no family history of heart disease, either. But I have severe coronary artery blockages and have heard it said several times already that I’m lucky it just didn’t kill me.

Pay attention to the warning signs: Chest pain and discomfort. Shortness of breath, especially on exertion. Pain in the chest after exertion. Decreased ability to exercise or do physical work. I had all of those. In hindsight, I realize I’ve been denying them for several months now.

In a previous life, my job was creating CPR-related training programs and teaching people to be instructors and instructor trainers in CPR. I’ve held the rating of “Master” trainer. I still denied what was going on and justified it away, even though I knew the symptoms backward and forward.

Don’t make the same mistake I did. You might not be as lucky.

Great reviews for Land Sharks!

January 22, 2016 By Eric Douglas

Land Shark CoverTwo more Four Star reviews for the Mike Scott short story Land Sharks. It’s free, so what are you waiting on?

Both of these reviews came through on Smashwords. This story is available in multiple ebook formats, including Nook, Kindle, iTunes and PDF. Of course, if you enjoy the story, there are six full-length novels full of Mike’s adventures.

Review by: JohnGuida49 on Jan. 20, 2016:  Four Stars
A fun story that put me under water scuba diving and on the tropical islands (which was cool). It also embroiled me in an environmental scandal that seemed pretty serious and intense. One minor issue, especially for a short piece, the author could have polished it a bit more and streamlined some paragraphs but not a major issue. I recommend it.

Review by: RetCPO1 on Jan. 21, 2016:  Four Stars
This author really took the time to write a cohesive story. We have several main characters in a tropical setting involved in a crisis that mounts with intensity and violence. The story was pleasant and interesting. Good Job.

Advent Ghosts 2015 Flash Fiction

December 19, 2015 By Eric Douglas

The days are getting shorter and colder. The nights are getting longer and more depressing. A perfect time for ghost stories! Haven’t you ever wondered about the song line “scary ghost stories of Christmases long, long ago”? People used to sit around the fire and share stories to pass the long night.

For the last few years, my writing friend Loren Eaton, through his I Saw Lightning Fall blog has organized a call for writers to contribute flash fiction ghost stories set around Advent, Christmas and the winter solstice. This is the modern equivalent of gathering around the fireplace. It’s not a contest. There is no judging and there are no prizes. It’s just a chance for writers to play and stretch their legs a bit. The catch is, the stories have a maximum limit of 100 words. No more. No less.

I don’t normally write in the genre, so I look forward to trying out something new and seeing what I can do with it. This is my fourth year participating.

Here are the links to 2014, 2013 and 2012 respectively.

  • A glass of wine and Parasite
  • The End of Darkness and Naughty List
  • A little bit of Grandma

When you’re done with my stories, check out the rest of the 2015 Advent Ghosts submissions. It’s amazing the stories you can tell using only 100 words!

And without further ado, here are my 2015 to the 2015 Advent Ghosts collection!

KrampusI saw mommy kissing…

Christmas eve. It’s midnight. Santa should be here. I have to see him. I hear something downstairs. Something’s going on. I just know it’s him.

I creep down the steps, straining to step past the third one. It creaks. As soon as I can, I peak. I see mom. But who is that with her? And what is he doing to her? I see blood on her lips and nose.

“Mom! What’s going on?”

“Run, child, run!” she yells.

I don’t listen. “Who are you? Are you Santa?”

“Santa isn’t coming here this year. I come for the naughty children!”

What if?

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“I’m so tired of these people. When are they going to understand I don’t have any rooms!” the old man grumbled. “What do you want?”

“Sir, my wife is with child and we need a place to stay. Can you help us? We’ll take anything.”

“There is nothing. Try someplace else.”

“We’ve tried everywhere. No one has any rooms. Please sir. We can stay in your barn.”

“I have nothing left. Even my barn is completely full. The man who arrived just before you brought his entire herd to town. You’ll have to sleep on the street.”

Lyin’ Fish giveaway: ScubaRadio and Ocean Divers

November 24, 2015 By Eric Douglas

ScubaRadio giving away book vouchers2015-11-04 15.50.08At the recent DEMA Show in Orlando, Florida, we organized a joint promotion for the book Lyin’ Fish between ScubaRadio and Ocean Divers in Key Largo. Every morning Greg Holt and ScubaRadio gave away 20 vouchers for free copies of the Withrow Key novella Lyin’ Fish. To get their free copy of the book, fans picked them up at the Ocean Divers booth. It worked out great for everyone, especially the people who got free copies of the book. I signed copies in the ScubaRadio booth as well.

Listen to my recent appearance on ScubaRadio talking about the promotion and the DEMA Show in general.
